It goes without question the first interaction is significant in determining the tone and course for the therapeutic relationship. The journey of change is both informational and dynamic while enhancing ability and responsibility, and requires a level of engagement that is accepting and authentic. We will explore the interview process including skills for obtaining necessary information leading to a competent assessment and treatment formulation as well as skills for engagement that is motivational for the client. We will expand on concepts of building the alliance and viewing the client to allow for generalizing of skills into their home, school, work, and society. We will address some key components that include being able to cast a vision of hope, demonstrating and earning trust, authenticity, mutual respect, and strength based resourcing highlighting competent strategies working toward effective engagement. In our endeavor to understand engagement we will address barriers to building the adequate therapeutic relationship as well as what engagement is not. (1.15 CE's)
